Mirror Image

I wish the mirror always showed me who I often am –
an unperturbed aloof cat
who raises her head as she hears footsteps,
looks over her shoulder, shrugs
and goes back to her business;

a self-assured jungle lion who roams about alone,
quietly, with an immense sense of purpose,
arching only an eyebrow as the leaves rustle,
confident that she can rip a black bear in two.

I wish the mirror always showed me who I often am
because I do not like it
when it shows me who I sometimes am –
a wounded lion who feels sorry for herself,
because she is caged and it is raining.
